Rob Miller: the real Big Spender in the SC-02 Congressional race

HEY, BIG SPENDER!
Liberal Democrat Rob Miller doesn’t “practice what he preaches” on spending

(COLUMBIA, SC – August 25, 2010) “When you point a finger at someone, you have three fingers pointing back at you.” Perhaps Rob Miller missed school the day his teacher taught that lesson. Although he is pointing an accusing finger on federal spending, his own fingers point right back at him on the same subject.

It all started late last week when the liberal Democrat’s congressional campaign issued a news release attacking Congressman Joe Wilson for supporting “the single largest instance of government spending in the history of our country when he voted for the bailout…”

Stop right there.

For starters, Miller’s assertion is wrong. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, commonly known as the “Stimulus Bill,” carried an estimated $814 billion price-tag and is widely considered to be (using the terminology in Miller’s own news release) “the largest single instance of government spending in the history of the country.” Congressman Joe Wilson voted against it. So Miller’s claim is utterly wrong. [Source: The Associated Press, August 24, 2010]

On top of that, while Joe Wilson voted against the enormous spending spree made possible by the stimulus bill, Rob Miller has attacked Joe Wilson for opposing it. Talk about trying to have it both ways!

But there’s more.

Rob Miller is on record as saying he would have voted for the massive hijacking of our nation’s health care system (peddled as “health care reform” and commonly derided as “Obamacare”) that was passed by Congress last March. [Source: Lexington County Chronicle, March 25, 2010]

Miller seems to have conveniently forgotten just how expensive this “reform” is. The socialization of America’s premiere health care system by the Obama-Pelosi-Reid Gang –which Rob Miller says he would have voted for– is expected to reach $940 billion dollars when all its costs are added up. [Source: The Associated Press, March 18, 2010]

What’s more, that measure is also the most sweeping power-grab ever made by the federal government. When this “reform” is fully enacted, its provision requiring all Americans to carry health insurance or a face a significant fine means the government will intrude into the life of every single American citizen. To put it simply, Washington liberals saw a chance to make Big Government even bigger, so they pounced on it. And Rob Miller is on record as saying he would have pounced with them.

Had he been in Congress at the time, Rob Miller says he would have voted to pass health care “reform,” right alongside Nancy Pelosi, Henny Stoyer, Barney Frank and the rest of Capitol Hill’s ruling liberal elite.

Rob Miller’s TV commercial boasts about “the courage to do what’s right.”

Doing “what’s right,” Mr. Miller, is being honest with the people of South Carolina. Doing “what’s right” is not posing as a “fiscal conservative” while also favoring a nearly $1 trillion dollar piece of legislation. Doing “what’s right” is not making misleading and inaccurate charges against your opponent.

Rob Miller’s latest negative attack is the latest reason why he is wrong on the issues, and wrong for South Carolina.

What if they held a “march” and nobody showed up?

MOVEON.ORG’S “MARCH” FIZZLES
Group can channel $370,000+ to Liberal Democrat Rob Miller,
but only gets one person to show up for protest

(COLUMBIA, SC – August 10, 2010) The poor guy standing on the side of the busy road this afternoon must have felt like the Maytag Repairman.

The extremist liberal group MoveOn.org had promised a march on Congressman Joe Wilson’s Midlands district office in West Columbia today.

But just one forlorn protester showed up holding signs. What a lonely way to spend a hot summer afternoon.

It is the latest setback for the group that has had a very bumpy ride lately. Just yesterday, a South Carolina hero added his voice to the growing chorus of military generals calling on liberal Democrat Rob Miller to cut his ties to MoveOn.org and to return the $370,000 he has received from them. Medal of Honor recipient and Major General James Livingston USMC (retired) put it this way when he talked t a group of military veterans at a luncheon in Beaufort on Monday: “I think he (Miller) ought to look at himself in the mirror and deal with that. If he’s the Marine I think he is, he’s going to look at himself and say, “You know, I’ve got to give that money back. They (MoveOn.org) don’t fit my background and my commitment to the American people.”

Consider this: the more than $370,000 that MoveOn.org has channeled from donors all across the country and sent it to Miller’s campaign is roughly the same amount that MoveOn.org funneled into the recount of votes in Minnesota that helped put leftist comedian Al Franken in the U.S. Senate, and that it directed to Martha Coakley’s ill-fated attempt in Massachusetts to keep Ted Kennedy’s seat in Democrat hands.

Rounding up a mountain of cash isn’t enough for MoveOn.org. While it is pumping big bucks into the Second District Congressional race in hopes of being a player in Palmetto politics, today’s extremely low turnout for their “march” is the latest sign that South Carolinians reject MoveOn.org.

That’s because their agenda is based on attacking and tearing down, not supporting and building up. While Congressman Joe Wilson focuses his efforts on helping bring badly-needed jobs to the Second Congressional District, MoveOn.org is content to rail against people who don’t share their liberal values.

Today’s “march” was meant to be a clever ploy to distract attention from the real issue: Rob Miller is hanging on to every last penny of the more than one-third of a million dollars MoveOn.org has sent him. This despite the fact that Miller knows MoveOn.org slandered the honor and integrity of General David Petraeus simply to advance its own liberal agenda.

Sorry Mr. Miller, but MoveOn.org’s plan to drag a red herring across the campaign trail didn’t work out as planned. That old Three Dog Night song was right; “one is the loneliest number.”
Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for your answer: will you do the right thing, cut your ties with MoveOn.org, and return the money to them?

You are telling us your answer with your silence.

The Democrats Are Freaking Out

A LIBERAL VISIT: Just days after claiming that the stimulus package should have included much MORE SPENDING, Vice President Joe Biden is in South Carolina raising money for fellow liberal John Spratt.

BIG MONEY CONCERN: The DCCC is freaking out now.  You’ve sent a strong message that you’re sick of John Spratt’s big spending and that message has been received loud and clear in Washington. Knowing they can’t lose their CHIEF BUDGET WRITER, the Democrats have purchased $750,000 in TV ads to help John Spratt.

BUILD OUR ARMY: We are 100% dedicated to taking John Spratt out in November. His big spending budgets are killing jobs across the nation and his home state continues to have one of the worst unemployment rates in America. Help us stop the spending NOW by donating to the South Carolina Republican Party.

Where in the world was Rob Miller?

Rob Miller apparently must realize he has no chance in November against the very popular Joe Wilson, so Rob is doing all he can to pad his frequent flyer account since he’ll have lots of time to vacation after the November election.

Miller’s camp made the unwise choice to highlight Joe Wilson’s week of meeting with small business owners and workers across the Second District. What Rob didn’t tell you was that during Joe’s week of meeting with constituents, Mile High Miller was out of state shaking down liberal elites.

Hob-Nobbing Rob chose Houston as his target on June 3. Rob even made Houston Style magazine, featuring him on the magazine Flickr photo page. At last check, Houston, Texas is not part of South Carolina’s Second District.

Among the guests, big-time liberal donors Parvin and Marty McVey. The McVey’s enjoy rubbing elbows with some of Washington’s most left leaning and biggest spending politicians. In November of 2009, the McVey’s hosted Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in addition to ultra-liberal Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and assorted healthcare and energy big shots.

Now we know who Miller likes to hang out with. While Joe Wilson works alongside his constituents, Rob is learning all about how to become a liberal big spender. While Rob Miller was on hiatus in Houston, Joe spent June 3 meeting with constituents in Aiken, Allendale and Barnwell.

The people of the Second District are smarter than this Rob.

Joe Wilson’s record of accountability and accessibility to Second District constituents is unmatched in Congress. Because of Joe’s strong stances on job-creation and cutting federal spending, he received 20,000-plus more votes in the June 8 primary than he did in the 2008 primary.

Miller is desperate for cash because South Carolina voters aren’t fooled by his act. Miller’s recent first quarter 2010 campaign finance report shows a bleak picture for Palmetto State support.

- Miller has received donations from fewer than 100 people in the Second District. By contrast, Joe Wilson has more than twice as many contributors in Miller’s own Beaufort County – 209, to be exact – than Miller has throughout the District.

- Miller only has 120 individual contributors statewide, compared to 1,547 for Wilson.

- Miller has 40 donors from California, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s campaign account.

- Miller’s combined take from liberal PAC’s and labor unions has totaled nearly $40,000, with roughly half of that amount coming from unions.

Yes, times are tough for Rob lately. We wish him well on his campaigning in New York, or is it California, check that, Houston! Rob apparently knows so little about South Carolina’s Second District that he might as well run for office in another state. Come to think of it, out of state voters might know more about Rob’s positions on issues like government-run healthcare and tax cuts; since he won’t tell South Carolina voters where he stands.

The End of Big Government Abuses

South Carolina Republican:

First and foremost, congratulations are in order for our candidates and their staffs that celebrated their well-deserved victories Tuesday night. Your vigorous campaigning for conservative solutions and values helped facilitate the largest turnout amongst voters in nearly twenty years. We are proud and excited to have each one of you in our ranks and wish luck to those who are preparing for the upcoming runoff.

As we eagerly anticipate the final formation of our ticket in just two weeks, we must also begin unifying our state party in preparation for one of the most important fall elections in recent memory. Two days ago, voters across the state wrote their collective mandate for fiscal conservatism, increased transparency, and the end of big government abuses. This stern demand was not written so that it could be filed away into a mere memory; rather, this outcry must be expedited to the front of our party’s agenda. It must be made clear in the mind of each and every voter that the South Carolina Republican Party hears their demands and will exceed their expectations.

We won’t fall to the big government agenda of Vincent Sheheen, Frank Holleman and Rob Miller. We’ll remind every voter that they have to look no further than Rock Hill toward John Spratt to see what a liberal looks like.

In order to succeed in this effort, it is essential that we strip away the differences that can accumulate from months of campaigning against fellow members of our party. Now is the time to begin assembling together the many unique qualities that we and the South Carolina voters have in common. By unifying our party into one cohesive voice, our shared values are sure to resonate with the concerned citizens of our state.

In the first step of this vital process, we will be hosting a “Post-Primary Unity Breakfast” on Wednesday, June 23. It will take place at 300 Senate Street in Columbia from 10:00am – 11:30am. You can call 803-988-8440 for more information.

Please be sure to attend this event, as it is imperative that we come together to make our party strong and unified in this election season.

We look forward to a positive runoff based on true conservative ideas instead of the politics of personal destruction and we’re excited to turn our attention to Nancy Pelosi’s South Carolina allies.

Sincerely,

Karen Floyd

Change Must Begin With Us

Political pundits keep asking — are we in an anti-incumbent or an anti-Democrat year? I think we are in an anti-status quo year. It could include Republicans, Democrats or incumbents who believe we should keep doing things they way they’ve always been done.

We have to accept the premise that Republicans were in charge when things started declining, and that’s because too many Republicans put their faith in government instead of people.

We have to get back to the roots of conservatism and demand that our elected officials stay true to our conservative Republican platform.

Nationally, we’ve seen what happens when the keys of government are handed over to people who don’t trust in the essential power of the individual to know what’s best for themselves. Instead, they’re growing government, restricting business and spending, spending, spending.

Now our country is socked with a ballooning debt, a big-government takeover of health care and in general, a fiscal mess that’s going to take a lot of hard work to turn around. Fortunately, here in South Carolina we have Republican leaders who are working to bring business to our state and keep the financial house in order.

And it’s done by using a formula that’s so simple, it’s amazing that’s it’s not universally followed: cut spending, limit government, reduce regulations. A lot of folks in Washington think that they know better than you about what to do. Conservatives know that what works best is letting people control their own destiny and putting trust into market-based solutions.

Announced in October of last year, the arrival of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner facility to North Charleston happened for several reasons. One was laying the groundwork – years of South Carolina conservatives creating a pro-business environment. Another was the coordinated work of state Republican leadership to bring in the plant. According to a recent study, it will mean $6.1 billion dollars annually for the state economy, and thousands of jobs created by vendors who will service the facility.

On May 19, Adidas opened a distribution center in Spartanburg County. This isn’t your average distribution center. It’s slated to employ 1,200 people and is Adidas’ largest hub for its shoes and clothing products in the world.

Change is happening – the right sort of change. To keep progress going, we have to continue electing conservative Republicans in positions up and down the ballot. But before the November elections, there’s the process of picking the right nominees in the primary on June 8. This year, we have a grand opportunity to get back to the basics and put a strong crop of conservatives in office. And in our state, the cupboard is well-stocked.

We have a fantastic slate of candidates in the Republican primary. Each of them can make the case of why they are the one who will base their decisions on conservative principles. I simply ask that you support the candidates who you personally believe will hold personal responsibility above big government.

Karl Rove to headline Silver Elephant Dinner

Straw poll to be held

Columbia, SC – April 15, 2010 – Famed Republican strategist, author, and former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove will be the keynote speaker at the South Carolina Republican Party’s 43rd Annual Silver Elephant Dinner.

During the Silver Elephant, the SCGOP will also be conducting a “straw poll” among attendees to gauge their preference for each of the six statewide constitutional offices with a primary – Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Treasurer, Comptroller General, and Superintendent of Education.

Rove, nicknamed “The Architect,” has a long history of running winning races for Republicans, most notably President George W. Bush. Signed copies of Rove’s recent book, “Courage and Consequence,” will be available at the event.

SCGOP Chairman Karen Floyd said that even though there is a clear conservative tide rising in our country right now, Republicans all over must employ winning strategies to get our message out, to take advantage of Democratic mistakes, and to ultimately win in November.

“It is an incredible win for our Party to have Mr. Rove and speak to us, and we are all eager to hear what he has to say,” Floyd said. “Karl Rove is someone who knows how to win in any electoral environment, and even though the country is clearly moving in a more conservative direction now, we cannot afford to be complacent. This is going to be a great event, and we are encouraging all of our Party faithful to not only come hear what Mr. Rove has to say, but to participate in our straw poll as well.”

Media are invited to attend the event, but must RSVP in advance, and bring news outlet issued or Press Association issued credentials on the night of the event.
