Senate Pushes Conservative Reforms

Senate Guarantees Right To Secret Ballot Elections in Union Votes, Makes Spending Caps Top Priority

Columbia, SC – March 10, 2010 – South Carolina’s Republican Senators today moved two key bills being pushed by the state’s business community. The Senate passed the anti-card check bill protecting workers from union intimidation. It also set legislation on special order creating a constitutional cap on state spending.

H.3305, introduced by Rep. Eric Bedingfield, is a constitutional amendment that would guarantee a worker’s right to voting by secret ballot during union organization. The legislation is a reaction to the deceptively named federal “Employee Free Choice Act,” which would strip workers of their right to vote for unionization by secret ballot, opening them up to intimidation and harassment by unions. The legislation is being pushed on the federal level by union bosses and their liberal allies in Congress.

The bill was passed on the heels of an announcement by Boeing executive Jim Albaugh that union work problems were the top reason for their departure from Washington. Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler (R-Cherokee), lead sponsor of the Senate companion bill stated” Boeing’s decision to expand its facility near Charleston serves as a reminder why we must protect our tough right-to-work laws. We are sending a strong message to the world: We want your business, and we’re committed to getting it.”

President Pro Tempore Glenn McConnell(R-Charleston) said “I don’t know of anything more basic to the essence of our nation than the right to a secret ballot election.”

Click here for a video statement from Senator Larry Martin (R-Pickens).

While Washington liberals continue growing our nation’s debt with explosive spending, South Carolina’s Republican Senators are working hard to protect taxpayers, limit spending, and grow our economy. S.2 is a bill developed by President Pro Tempore Glenn McConnell creating a spending cap and budget stabilization fund. The amount of money state legislators could spend each year would be limited to the average revenue growth of the previous ten years and any additional funds would be placed in a rainy day account for budget shortfalls like we are now facing.

Miller hides from the cameras

You have to feel for Rob Miller. He loses his race in 2008 against U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson by eight points, and somehow has to spin it into saying it was a close race. He has to accept more than a million dollars in contributions from out-of-state liberals because South Carolinians just aren’t buying what he’s selling. And even after running for Congress once before, he’s still not ready for the big time.

A few weeks ago, he went to speak to a Democratic organization in Irmo. The group, trying to garner some publicity, invited Columbia media to the event. A crew from WIS showed up, cameras ready, to get some shots, talk to a few people and put together a story. If handled properly, it would have been a fairly innocuous event, a forgettable story, and everyone would have moved on.

If only it were so simple. WIS was not allowed to tape Miller speaking to the group, even after being asked to come to the event. Miller says that it must have been the Irmo Democratic group, since his staff wouldn’t have done such a thing. Unfortunately for him, that doesn’t make any sense.

It doesn’t add up that an organization would encourage a television station to show up just to deny it access. You can see the WIS story here:

That’s not the only obfuscation Miller has been up to. A recent story in The (Hilton Head) Island-Packet told of how he was saying he was going around, meeting with, “‘local business leaders’ or ‘community leaders’ or ‘church leaders.’” But he won’t say who any of these people are, specifically.

Earlier in February, the Lexington County Chronicle wanted to talk to Miller, but the campaign staff said there wouldn’t be an interview unless Miller received the questions in advance. Few newspapers in this state would consent to a pre-scripted setup.

What is he hiding?

The fact is, when it really comes down to it, Miller is hiding from the media and hiding from voters. It’s no wonder – a campaign funded by Northeastern and West Coast liberals run against one of the most popular elected officials in our state is not likely to have good odds in a head-to-head competition.

That doesn’t mean we can let up, though. Miller has well over $1 million to spend on the race, and will do everything he can to unseat one of South Carolina’s finest representatives in Congress. Join the grassroots team that will lead Republicans to victory in 2010 by making calls to other voters at  www.voterfetch.com/step2/SCV2010/.

Every person, every effort is needed to work to get our country back to the conservative leadership it deserves.

Local Democrats: MoveOn.org mystery man Miller is lying about who kicked the media out of Feb. 18 event

Democrat congressional candidate Rob Miller’s attempts to earn the public trust aren’t going over too well in the Second District of South Carolina.

He’s currently mired in a war of words with his own supporters, trying to blame local Democrat Party activists for his campaign’s decision to hide the MoveOn.org-backed candidate from the media.

On February 18th, Miller spoke to the Greater Irmo Democratic Club. NBC affiliate WIS-TV reported then that Miller’s campaign kicked out the station’s photographer when the event began.

<object width=”480″ height=”385″><param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/FiPVmqSrgfM&hl=en_US&fs=1&”></param><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”></param><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”></param><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/FiPVmqSrgfM&hl=en_US&fs=1&” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”480″ height=”385″></embed></object>XX

Last night on WIS-TV’s 11pm newscast (see attached video clip), Club spokesperson Joanne Hafter confirmed the station’s account: “I just want to set the record straight. Neither I nor anyone with GIDC made the decision to exclude the media…It was Rob’s campaign manager who was adamant about not having press coverage.”

But when WIS-TV somehow managed to get Miller to sit down for an interview, his statement about the incident to anchor Ben Hoover contradicted the accounts of both Hafter and WIS-TV.

Hoover: “We were told to leave, though.”

Miller: “Well, I, you know, not, not by my staff.”

“Even local Democrats are sensing that Rob Miller will say anything to get elected, going so far as to dishonestly throw his own supporters under the bus to protect his own image,” said Andy Seré, spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee. “He may be MoveOn.org’s darling, but to South Carolinians he remains a liberal mystery man who just can’t be trusted.”

Chairman Floyd issues statement on House's jobs bill

Columbia, SC – March 4, 2010 – South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Karen Floyd today issued the following statement on the Economic Development Competitiveness Act passed by the state House of Representatives:

“Our Republican leaders in the House today showed they understand how important lower taxes and a business-friendly environment are to creating jobs,” Floyd said. “The contrast we are going to offer voters in November could not be more clear, as Democrats believe more taxes and more debt are the prescription for our country. We applaud Republicans for not only standing against this, but for offering positive alternatives of our own.”

This Man Knows How to Beat Democrats

SC Republican Friend –

We are excited to be partnering with the Spartanburg County Republican Party in bringing strong conservative leader strong conservative leader Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour in on Monday, March 15th for a fundraiser.

I’m sure you’ve seen Haley Barbour on Fox News, pushing for the most conservative government reforms. He’s been a staunch conservative who has been leading a national fight against President Obama’s explosive and wasteful government growth. As Chairman of the Republican Governor’s Association, Governor Barbour led astonishing victories in Virginia and New Jersey. And, he was Chairman of the RNC during the Republican Revolution in 1994. He’s proven that he knows how to win and he’ll be one of the champions pushing us toward victory in November.

I cannot encourage you enough to turn out for this big event and welcome Haley Barbour to South Carolina.

Sincerely,

Karen Floyd

Where in the World is Rob Miller, Part II

Columbia, SC – February 24, 2010 – Democratic Congressional candidate Rob Miller has been busy, but not in the Second Congressional District where he’s running.

First, he was clinking glasses with a liberal club in Manhattan. Last night, he was in Washington, D.C. kowtowing to union bosses at a fundraiser. Tonight, he’s back in the national capital with arch-liberal Nancy Pelosi at yet another leftist meet and greet. National liberal leaders Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, James Clyburn, and others hosted a “Meet Our 2010 Candidates” reception at the DNC Headquarters tonight, which Miller is attending.

Today, S.C. GOP Executive Director Joel Sawyer issued the following statement on Miller’s recent activity:

“You can tell a lot by the company people keep, and judging by the people that Mr. Miller is associating with, it’s clear he doesn’t represent the values of hard-working South Carolinians,” Sawyer said. “Mr. Miller is spending so much time raising money with out of state liberals, he just might jeopardize his residency requirement for running in South Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District.”

Union Bosses support Miller for Congress

Rob Miller realizes that it is hard for him to raise money in South Carolina. Maybe that is why he is holding a fundraiser in Washington DC, at the headquarters of a national worker’s union. The union bosses have chosen him to carry their message in Congress. It’s time for South Carolina to show that we don’t want candidates who kowtow to union bosses.

This union fundraiser shows the voters of South Carolina’s 2nd District how truly out of touch Miller has become. Why would Rob Miller want the support of unions? The Boeing company made South Carolina the envy of the world when they announced that they would bring thousands of jobs to our state. And part of why Boeing chose South Carolina is because we are a right to work state.

While Joe Wilson is on his “Joe Means Jobs” tour throughout the state, his Democratic opponent is wining and dining with union bosses in DC. It truly displays who is the right leader for South Carolina’s 2nd District.

Help show your support for Joe and the SCGOP. If possible, please make a donation to the SCGOP. We need a conservative that will help bring jobs, not abusive unions, to our state.

One of the best ways to show your support for the SCGOP is to join the Dollar a Day program. By simply donating a dollar a day, 30 dollars a month, or 365 dollars a year you can dramatically help the conservative movement .

Why I switched to Republican: We need jobs

The following editorial appeared in the Augusta chronicle yesterday, we thought that it was an inspiring piece from a new South Carolina Republican. Please take a moment to read.

Certainly, it has surprised some in our community that as a lifelong Democrat and a member of the United Steelworkers of America for 36 years, I decided to become a Republican.

It wasn’t a choice I made capriciously, nor was it something that hadn’t already been a long time coming.

I’D LIKE TO START out by saying that I’m proud to be a steelworker, and proud for standing up for jobs in Georgetown County, S.C. I’ve been president of USW Local 7898 for 22 years.

But now, the plant is idle and people around here are hurting. Men and women, committed to putting in a hard day’s work to provide for their families, are now doing whatever they can to get by.

I don’t need to tell you that a person’s work is important. Just look at a man who has been out of work, then look at one who just got a new job, or just got called back to work after a layoff. It’s night and day. Unfortunately, around here, we’ve been seeing a lot more people out of work than those getting jobs. That has to change.

The fact is, Democrats aren’t doing it. They aren’t getting it done when it comes to creating jobs and securing a good business climate.

For years, I was a Democrat because I thought they represented the interests of working people. That’s certainly not true anymore. They seem to have forgotten that when you harm businesses, you take away their ability to hire new people or even keep current employees on staff.

One example is the cap-and-trade debacle that they’ve taken up. This will take a giant sledgehammer to the American manufacturing base. The plant I worked in for so many years would probably never reopen. All those people I worked so hard for on behalf of the union would be dealt a critical blow.

I moved to Georgetown County in 1974. Democrats have been in control of the county council for almost all of the ensuing years. What do they have to show for it? Precious little. Over the years, it’s become very obvious that the Republican Party in the county is the real standard-bearer for job creation. It’s not that hard to figure out.

WHEN YOU’RE pro-business, you’re pro-worker, too. As companies prosper and expand, people get hired, and get raises and better benefits. A company that’s doing well doesn’t want to lose good employees. So, if they’re doing a good job, and you’re doing a good job, everybody wins. That’s why we can’t tax and regulate businesses to within an inch of their lives.

Republicans understand this. I’ve been for lower taxes for as long as I can remember. You can’t do what the Democrats are doing — raising taxes on people — while the government is spending money on foolish items and programs. You can’t slap massive tax increases on companies and expect them to go on a hiring blitz. It simply defies reality.

Some people don’t know this, but a lot of union members, like myself, are conservative. We believe in faith and family. We have a reverence for tradition. We love our country, and want it to be strong.

WE OPPOSE ILLEGAL immigration and support strong borders because America doesn’t need people breaking the law coming into the country to take our jobs and take advantage of our government programs without paying the tax dollars that fund those programs. Our nation is one of immigrants, but legal immigrants. If you want to live and work here, you have to obey the law like everyone else.

I’ve talked to the membership in the local, and a good portion of the members are coming with me, working to help get Republicans elected. I don’t see a contradiction in my being a union member and a Republican, because the only party out there busting its hump for job creation is the Republican Party.
